Getting the last few pages in order

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

It’s funny- now that i’m getting towards the home stretch here (as far as getting the final pages laid out, anyway), the more difficult some of these pages become. I’m referring here to the front pages, specifically; the main splash page, credits, table of contents, and so on. I’ve been getting a lot of help from Kevin Ross and Dean Engelhardt to steer me in the right direction, but it’s still a bit of a struggle. Similarly, caption text is kicking my ass. Trying to come up with one line phrases that are appropriate to the image and don’t sound silly or forced…it’s trickier than you might think.

The ToC seems to be coming along nicely…gonna be a biggun’, that’s for sure.

Happy New Year!

Sorry for the lack of updates, but the holidays kinda put a crimp in time. I can report that Horror for the Holidays has been released, and should be available at your local bookstore…or you can order it on, or directly from Miskatonic River Press, of course!

Cthulhu by Gaslight has been coming along nicely, and it’s getting close to being done…well, until it gets reviewed and sent back for corrections, of course. 😛

To whet your appetite for Gaslight, i’m presenting here, for the first time, some of the artwork done by the esteemed artists for the book; Adam Denton, David Grilla, and John T. Snyder. To wit:

Done, almost done, and, uh, not quite done.

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

It’s official- Lux In Tenebras has been released to the public! You can purchase a copy of this lovely .pdf release for Cthulhu Invictus at Miskatonic River Press’ website here.

Meanwhile, we’re getting very close with Dissecting Cthulhu, S.T. Joshi’s collection of essays on HP Lovecraft’s writings. I’d say we’re about 95% done; right now, i’m waiting on proofreading corrections, after had just finished putting the index in.

As for Cthulhu by Gaslight…it goes. Doing what work that i can on it. I’m taking a new approach to the layout, to hopefully speed up the process for when the artwork does indeed arrive.

I’ve slowly but steadily working on my revision for (Altered) Resonance, my World War II/Delta Green one shot scenario. It’s somehow ballooned to over 17,000 words. Not exactly sure how that happened. I’ve reworked the ending of it a bit, but not so drastically that it wouldn’t hold up under another playtest. It’s getting close to being done; the next step after this will be to submit it to Pagan and see what they think of it…

BRP Magic Book is going to the printer!

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Sorry for the lack of updates, but there hasn’t been too much to report on. I’ve finished up a supplement for The Legacy of Arrius Lurco, called Lux in Tenebras; it’s a .pdf-only book, and is currently under final review by the MRP head honcho Tom. I expect it’ll be available next week. I’ll post a cover shot of it soon.

Meanwhile, the artists continue to crank away at the art assets for Gaslight 3rd. ed. We’re basically in a holding pattern until those are done. What i have seen looks amazing.

The big news at the moment is that i talked to Charlie today, and the BRP Magic Book, which has been done on my end for a few months now, is finally going to the printer this week. Huzzah! I’ve been waiting to see that thing on the shelves. If you’re a BRP Fantasy guy, and want to delve more into magic, this will be right up your alley.

More Gaslight, and some new Arrius Lurco stuff

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Didn’t mean to get all quiet on the blog front, but i’ve been heads down, trying to shore up Cthulhu by Gaslight while i wait for the art to come through, and work on a new supplement bit for The Legacy of Arrius Lurco (which i don’t think i can get into more yet right now, as Miskatonic River Press hasn’t said anything publicly about it).

In the meantime, i’ve been doing some more writing; i really need to stop getting ideas for scenarios pouncing into my brain at 2 in the morning…especially when i already have several that i need to finish first.

I’m trying to find out when the BRP Magic Book will get released, along with Bumps in the Night. Hopefully there will be news on that soon…

Well, some good news and bad news on the art front. I’ve recently seen more art sketches from the other artist, and they look absolutely great- Gaslight is going to have some fantastic artwork in it.

Bad news is that the other artist had disaster befall him in the form of the horrendous heatwave taking out his computer and backups…which resulted in the loss of a bunch of his artwork.  Which means that Gaslight may be delayed a bit. *sigh* It happens sometimes, unfortunately; the same exact data loss crippled Secrets of San Francisco for months on end, hence forcing that book into almost vaporware status. Funny, i put together that book, too. Hmmm….

Maps, glorious maps

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Just a quick note that i’ve started to get some of the preliminary map art in, and it’s amazing. Granted, i kinda knew it would be (it is Steff Worthington, after all), but i’m still super stoked about it. *bounce bounce*

Didn’t mean for me to neglect ol’ Squamy like that. Just been so busy with working on books that i forgot to stop and talk about the work!

Gaslight 3rd ed. continues to occupy the vast majority of my time. It’s really coming along quite nicely so far; i’ve about 3/4 of the way through getting the raw text in a managable form, taking care of boxed text items, and generally massaging the basic book into shape. There’s still plenty of work to be done as far as page decoration and such, but the core of the book is really getting there.

What’s really awesome is that i’ve been able to talk to both Kevin Ross and John T. Snyder about Gaslight; between John and another artists i’m lining up, this is really going to be a kick-ass looking sourcebook.

Meanwhile, bit by bit, inch by inch, Bumps in the Night crawls closer and closer out of its cavern and into the light. I swear.

It also sounds like i’ll be putting together some more material for MRP’s Arrius Lurco release, which will make all you Cthulhu Invictus fans even more happy. And we’ve got (i think) all of our ducks in a row for the next MRP release, so i’ll be talking about that soon-ish.

Lastly, Squamous Studios is involved in a non-RPG project, doing colouring work for a web comic. I’ll post more about that soon.

Arrius Lurco has been unleashed!

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

As i type this, copies of The Legacy of Arrius Lurco are winding their way to distributors and around the globe. I’m damn proud of this book, and i can’t wait to see it in physical form. It’s one thing to view it on the screen, either in InDesign or as a .pdf; it’s a whole other experience to see the actual book. Go grab yourself a copy!

I also did the layout for a couple of bonus scenarios that go out to those special customers who pre-ordered Arrius Lurco.

Moving on from Lurco, i’m currently polishing up an old scenario i wrote a long time ago that first saw publication in Book of Dark Wisdom, back when they were focused on the Call of Cthulhu RPG, and not fiction. This revised edition will see publication on The Unspeakable Oath’s website. After that scenario, i’ve about about three more that i need to get cracking on.

And as far as book design goes, Project: Top Hat, which is actually Cthulhu by Gaslight 3rd Edition, is my next big project, and i’ve already undertaken a lot of the backstage work on it; finding/buying books on the late Victorian era, getting fonts in order, figuring out page decoration, sorting out the text, and other fun stuff. I’ve even been in contact with Kevin Ross, the main author of the 3rd Edition, which has been really cool. All i’m missing now is some new artwork…

At any rate, the goal is to have this puppy done by some time in the summer. Eek!

Obviously, it’s a bet of a mess around here at the moment.

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

I was attempting to do some reformatting of the title page graphics and such, but obviously it needs more work. I think a major overhaul is in order, but i’m going to need some help with it- i’m not much of a coder, but i can tell there’s some code-wrangling i’m going to need to do to get the site the way i want it.

At any rate, i fired off the CD for the BRP Magic Book to Chaosium this week, and have been making more tweaks to Arrius Lurco while Tom and his crew go over it for mistakes and corrections. I also talked to Scott at Pagan, and amoung other things, i pitched him my (Altered) Resonance scenario, which he is very keen on. So all i have to do is polish it off (which should take about a month or so), and send it off to him. Woot.

I’ve also started working on Project: Top Hat some more, which at this stage of the game, is really herding all the text together. I’m dealing with different editions of stuff, plus some brand new text that was written specifically for the new edition, so i’m getting a lot of practice with OCR. Not exactly fun fun, but it’s grunt work that’s gotta get done before anything else with the book design happens.
